Inside the Transparent Shell, A Material Study

Inside the Transparent Shell, A Material Study

Industrial design is often an exercise in hiding compromises. Cheap plastic is painted to simulate metal. Metal is stamped dangerously thin to save shipping weight. We rejected this methodology entirely. The ASTRAL-01 is built from raw, unpainted materials.

Polycarbonate as the Primary Housing

The outer dome is injection-molded, optical-grade polycarbonate. It is the exact material used in modern aircraft canopies. It provides extreme impact resistance while remaining significantly lighter than a solid aluminum enclosure. It will not shatter, and at this thickness, it will not warp.

The Acoustic Benefit of Plastics

Solid metal enclosures often introduce unwanted ringing and resonance frequencies. Thick polycarbonate is acoustically dead. It traps the sound wave inside the acoustic chamber, preventing the shell itself from vibrating and coloring the audio signal. The material serves the sound.

The Structural Aluminum Frame

The transparent shell is anchored to a solid, CNC-milled aluminum chassis. This silver frame acts as the structural spine of the headset. It provides absolute rigidity for the 50mm planar magnetic drivers, ensuring they fire with perfect geometric alignment regardless of how the headset is handled.

Thermal Management

The aluminum chassis also functions as a passive heatsink. The modular A1 Logic Board and onboard amplification units generate thermal energy. The metal frame draws this heat away from the sensitive internal circuits, ensuring stable digital performance during extended, high-volume operation.

Tactile Touchpoints

Where the hardware meets the human body, the materials must shift. We use high-density memory foam wrapped in breathable synthetic suede for the ear pads and headband. This creates an airtight acoustic seal around the ear, dropping the external noise floor dramatically before the digital signal processing even begins.

The Philosophy of Visibility

We chose transparency because we believe engineering should be accountable. When every solder joint, wire route, and structural screw is completely visible to the end user, there is absolutely no room for poor manufacturing. We do not need a logo to define the design. The raw materials are the aesthetic.
